What's Good in Niagara? River Lions planning 10th anniversary celebrations

Alumni game, breakfast, banner raising all in the works

2025 marks ten years of the Niagara River Lions bringing fast, thrilling action to the Meridian Centre court - and the team has lots in store to celebrate that.

This week, which falls on the 10-year anniversary of the team being announced publicly, the team has revealed plans to honour their history.

One of those plans is a 10th Anniversary Celebration Night scheduled for June 13th, which will welcome back a number of alumni, former team staff, coaches, interns and volunteers for festivities - capped off by a ring ceremony and banner raising for their 2024 CEBL Championship.

President Michelle Biskup its important to thank everyone that's been part of the organization the last decade.

While planning is ongoing for an alumni game and breakfast, many are reminiscing on the memories and players of the past.

Biskup, who has been with the team since early in season one, says she's heard a lot from people that used to be involved.

What started out as an idea to bring high quality basketball to the region has led to a championship, after years of trial and error in both the Canadian Elite Basketball League, and the now-defunct National Basketball League of Canada for the River Lions.

For the 10th anniversary season, the team has undergone somewhat of a rebrand - opting for black and lime green instead of the previous navy and lime green.

Biskup says this process is already underway.

According to a team release, the colour black symbolizes strength, resilience and dominance, while lime green is associated with energy, passion and relentless drive - all things Biskup says represents the River Lions and its community well.

The River Lions kick off their championship defense season on Friday, May 16th at the Meridian Centre against the Calgary Surge. Season and individual game tickets are available through the team's website.
